Rhoscolyn, Anglesey
If you watched this week’s YouTube video you’ll have seen that I shared some images from my recent day trip to Rhoscolyn on the island of Anglesey in North Wales.
Anglesey holds a really special place in my heart and it’s somewhere me and my girlfriend, Alex, love to revisit as often as possible. It’s really nostalgic for us, it’s where we took our first trip together and is a place where we’ve created so many memories since.
There are so many beautiful coves, beaches and villages dotted along the Anglesey coastline and we’ve ticked off quite a few of them. We’d never ventured to this corner of the island which is in the North West of the Island, close to Trearddur Bay. Many of the towns and villages have a similar feel. They feel very, ‘North Wales’ which probably doesn’t mean much if you’re not familiar with Wales. The easiest way to describe it is having somewhat of a ‘tired charm’. Many of the houses and buildings are older, there’s not much in the way of modernity, aside from the newer houses built by the more affluent visitors who likely aren’t local.
That being said, whilst some of the villages look a little rundown, there are pockets all across the island, of communities that have retained their character and break the mould somewhat and Rhoscolyn certainly felt like one of those.
One of the best features of Anglesey is it’s coastal path which straddles the coast and creates easily accessible hikes from any coastal location you may come across. Rhoscolyn was no different. Following the coastal path outside of the village you can cross the fields along the sea cliffs which provide beautiful views perfectly framed by wildflowers at this time of year. As you gain in elevation you can see the Coastguard Lookout Station up ahead which offers beautiful panoramic views back down to the village and to the rest of Anglesey beyond.
This little community was really picturesque and had a lot to offer from quite beachy coves to coastal cliff walks, all of which had bags of character. If you ever find yourself on Anglesey, it’s somewhere worth spending an hour or 2.
